Honda y Guarinocito lagoon
On the road between Bogotá and Medellín, it’s worth making a stop in the small town of Honda.
With its colonial houses and cobblestone streets, this place feels frozen in time. During the day, you can wander through its alleys and discover the old part of town, where two beautiful churches stand out, reflecting the colonial heritage of the region.
Honda is located on the banks of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s most important one. From there, several companies offer boat tours.
One of its main attractions is the Navarro Bridge, built by the San Francisco Bridge Company and inaugurated in 1899. It was the first steel and iron bridge in Latin America, and from it, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the river and the town.
Although Honda is usually quiet during the day, when night falls, the main square comes to life. There are vendors selling local food, handicrafts, and several restaurants open their doors to visitors, creating a cheerful and welcoming atmosphere.
Just 20 minutes from the center lies the Guarinocito Lagoon, a perfect place to connect with nature. There, boat rides are offered to observe the rich flora and fauna of the area; you can see different birds and other animals (capybaras, caimans, etc.), and it’s even possible to swim along the shores of the lagoon.
However, keep in mind that Honda is a very hot place, and temperatures during the day can rise above 30°C, so it’s recommended to look for accommodation with a pool, ideal for cooling off after exploring the town.
