Cartagena de Indias

On the northern coast of Colombia lies Cartagena de Indias, one of the most beautiful cities in all of Latin America. It’s almost a must-see when visiting Colombia. As you stroll through its colonial streets, you’ll experience a perfect blend of rich culture, history, and modern life. The historic center has even been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While wandering through the narrow alleys, you’ll find colorful houses, historic squares, and charming little cafés that invite you to linger. The mix of architecture, the sea, and vibrant culture gives Cartagena a special atmosphere – peaceful yet full of life.

The city offers plenty to see and do: the Castle of San Felipe, the largest fortress in Latin America, provides a stunning view of the sea. You can take boat tours to the Rosario Islands, a group of islands with crystal-clear waters and coral reefs ideal for snorkeling or relaxing by the seaside. Just ten minutes from town, the Cerro de la Popa hill offers a breathtaking 360° view over the city and the Caribbean Sea.

It’s worth noting that the beaches within Cartagena are not the most impressive in the Caribbean, but they are pleasant for enjoying the sea without leaving the city. If you’re looking for quieter beaches and clearer waters, you can take a day trip to nearby islands and beaches. However, it’s a good idea to check ahead, as some places can get quite crowded during high season.

Cartagena also has a rich cultural and artistic scene. You can visit the Zenú Gold Museum and the Inquisition Museum, both offering insight into the city’s past. The Santa Catalina Cathedral is another must-see.
Cartagena’s cuisine blends Afro-Colombian, Caribbean, and Creole flavors. At night, bars fill up with people and the lively Caribbean spirit takes over — music, dance, and joy by the sea.

Although Cartagena has become more touristy over the years — and is now known as the most expensive city in Colombia — it still retains its unique charm thanks to its atmosphere, history, and seaside location.
The best way to experience it is slowly, beyond the most crowded areas. If you don’t let the street vendors or tourist buzz distract you, you’ll discover an authentic city full of color, culture, and warmth.

Cartagena is the perfect place to begin or end your journey through Colombia. After exploring the Coffee Region, Medellín, or the tropical jungle, Cartagena offers the perfect finale — sea, history, and relaxation all in one.
