Lost City of Falan

The Lost City of Falan, or La Colonia Complex, is one of the most interesting historical sites in northern Tolima. Located in the mountains of Falan, this former colonial mining center preserves stone walls, channels, and tunnels once used for gold extraction. Today, the forest has slowly reclaimed the area, creating a peaceful landscape where history and nature blend naturally.

The walk to the complex is easy and accessible for most travelers. The trail crosses humid forest, small streams, and shaded areas, and you can visit the main points in less than half a day. Local guides provide valuable information about the old hydraulic system and about the flora and fauna that now surround the site.

Beyond the historical aspect, the area offers several activities for visitors seeking something more dynamic. Nearby, you can try canopy circuits among tall trees, cross a Tibetan bridge over clear streams, or practice canyoning (torrentismo) on small waterfalls in the zone. For a quieter moment, La Colonia Creek is ideal for resting and enjoying a refreshing swim in cool, clear water after the walk.

A few kilometers away lies Mariquita, a warm town with good tourist services. It’s a convenient base to complement the visit with attractions such as Cascada Medina, the Botanical Garden, Cerro de la Cruz, and several routes leading to natural areas and coffee farms nearby.

Northern Tolima remains a calm region with low-scale tourism and rural landscapes that invite slow exploration. In Falan, simple accommodations and local hospitality allow travelers to connect with the mountain atmosphere while discovering the area’s natural and historical attractions.
